Tardezinha Music School kicks off classes in Penha Complex, focusing on social inclusion

Project conceived by Thiaguinho, a  famous Brazilian singer, and carried out in partnership with CUFA bets on music as a tool for transformation for vulnerable youth.

The Tardezinha Music School began its activities last Thursday, June 12, at the CUFA headquarters in Vila do Cruzeiro, in the Complexo da Penha, North Zone of Rio. This pilot project targets young people aged 10 to 18 and aims to promote social inclusion through music education.

Conceived by singer and composer Thiaguinho, this initiative is a partnership with the Central Única das Favelas (CUFA) and offers free classes in singing, cavaquinho, guitar, and percussion. All activities are held in person, on Mondays and Thursdays, from 2:30 PM to 5:45 PM.

Early in the course, students participate in a collective musical immersion session where they get to experience different styles and instruments. Through this practical interaction, and with the support of the pedagogical team, each student is guided to choose the path that best suits their profile and development.

The methodology adopted is participatory and inclusive, focusing on strengthening self-esteem, youth protagonism, and valuing cultural roots. In addition to technical classes, young people participate in group practice workshops, music theory using the O Passo method, discussion circles, workshops with industry professionals, and sociocultural exchanges.

For Marcus Vinicius Athayde, director of CUFA Global, the project represents a concrete opportunity for transformation. “We are talking about artistic training, but also about self-esteem, opportunities, and a possible future for these young people. It’s an initiative that makes CUFA proud and can serve as a model for all of Brazil,” he states.

The project’s structure is supported by a network of public and private partners, including CRAS, CREAS, SUS, third-sector organizations, and volunteers. CUFA is responsible for providing the space and coordinating local partnerships.

Even with classes already started, there are still some spots available. Interested individuals can register in person at the CUFA Penha headquarters while opportunities last.
