CUFA places favelas at the center of the climate debate at the UN Climate Action Information Hub

On Wednesday, November 19, CUFA participated in the UN Climate Action Information Hub at the Itamaraty Palace in downtown Rio de Janeiro. Representing the organization, Luccas Henrique Feffer delivered the talk “Favelas at the Center of the Climate Debate,” bringing essential reflections on the role of favelas and peripheral territories within the global environmental agenda.
The action took place in parallel with COP30, which continues to mobilize global climate discussions.

The presentation highlighted CUFA’s longstanding commitment to supporting communities facing social vulnerability and emergency situations, as well as ongoing initiatives that strengthen local territories. During the session, CUFA emphasized that favelas and peripheral regions have historically been excluded from major sustainability and climate policy discussions — despite being the areas most impacted by extreme climate events.

Floods, landslides, heatwaves, and other consequences of the climate crisis disproportionately affect people living in vulnerable territories — a situation worsened by the lack of specific and consistent public policies. By bringing this issue to the forefront, CUFA reiterates the urgency of recognizing these communities as key actors in climate solutions, innovation, and resilience.

About the UN Climate Action Information Hub

Located inside the Itamaraty Palace, the Hub is an initiative by the UN in Brazil and the United Nations Information Centre for Brazil (UNIC Rio), in partnership with AIEC. The space provides support and a collaborative work environment for journalists, communicators, collectives, and content creators covering the events and developments leading up to COP30.
